A ROOM OF ONE´S OWN
A ROOM OF ONE´S OWN BY VIRGINIA WOOLF
This essay by Virginia Woolf starts by talking about how any woman should have her own room and have 500 pounds freely. adding that this metaphorically is mental freedom and freedom of thought. Moreover, money is physical freedom, freedom of movement, and freedom to do whatever you want. This essay is feminist and shows the rights that women have and it sets up an important socio-political analysis from the perspective of gender. It is also mentioned that England is under the domination of patriarchy, and women take care of the houses and children, not being able to follow their aspirations as they should.
To understand the context of the essay, there are 3 critiques in which we will see the most important points.
1-The first criticism that Virginia makes in her essay is about the exclusion of women from educational and recreational spaces. Firstly, she mentions the lack of financial independence of women, which is a strong point since it is argued that economic freedom is important for women as well and not just for men. Since at that time women were tied, it is mentioned that they only took care of the children, and the house and they had no chance to do anything else and pursue their dreams and aspirations, and not like now that progress has been made in women's economic empowerment.
2-The second criticism that Virginia makes addresses the limitations of education which is another very important point since there is also a very great inequality that affects the intellectual growth that women can develop, for this reason, there are quite a few gender stereotypes. Adding that although a woman may have sufficient intellectual capabilities she will always be seen as inferior to a man, which is why Virginia refers to the female voices that must be exalted to change this reality.
3-The third criticism that Virginia mentions is the absence of female role models in literature and history, arguing that women need examples to inspire their aspirations. Moreover, the important thing is that today more female groups have raised their voices to stand out and be successful as well as men, and there is still a lot to fight to be able to amplify the various narratives and perspectives. Overall, women must get their money and not let anyone silence them.
This incredible feminist writer's comparison to contemporary society has seen progress in women's rights, but persistent challenges demand continued attention to improve everything. Adding that economic disparities, educational obstacles, and the need for diverse representation persist, for this reason, the essay is known in the modern context as reflecting a dynamic and inclusive space adorned with diverse voices, which encourages creativity and empowerment. For this reason, the walls are depicted adorned with achievements of women in various fields, implying progress and at the same time the process of an ongoing journey towards equality.
